The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural & Educational Center, Inc. (The Clemente) will host Fearless, a series featuring LGBTQ artists presenting works in direct response to the tragedy in Orlando and continuing attacks against the LGBTQ community. Connected by the theme of understanding and unity, these events will be spread throughout our 2017-18 season. Artists will have time and space to fully dedicate themselves to the creation of their own artistic work, while contributing to an intercultural exchange among a supportive community of artists in Manhattan’s culturally and artistically vibrant Lower East Side.

Shawn Morgenlander has cleverly translated Pedro Calderón de la Barca’s fantastical Spanish Golden Age play La vida es sueño from Spanish to English to be presented on the Spicy Witch stage. In Life is but a Dream, Rosaura sets out on a quest to Poland in order confront her ex-boyfriend. Along the way she discovers a dizzying array of estranged relatives, unfulfilled prophecies and struggles for succession.
SWP 2018 Writer-in-Residence Iris Dauterman’s world premiere play, Merrily, Merrily, inspired by de la Barca’s La vida es sueño,and set in a world of clinical diagnoses and medications, questions the separation between dreams and reality. Centered around a family struggling to reconnect despite prolonged estrangement, Dauterman’s play explores the complexities of kinship, gratitude and forgiveness.
