April 3 – 30, 2017, LES Gallery
The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center (The Clemente)
in collaboration with Teatro LATEA will be hosting
one of the Special Programs organized by the 18th Havana Film Festival New York (HFFNY)
by celebrating Juan Padrón’s 70th birthday with art and film presentations.
“Juan Padrón: From Havana to New York” showcases paintings and drawings
from the artist’s illustrious career, including several memorable renditions of vampires as
well as portraits of Cuban freedom fighter Elpidio Valdés. Curated by Alexis Mendoza.
Join HFFNY, The Clemente, and Teatro LATEA in welcoming Juan Padrón and his
family direct from La Habana for a gallery opening reception on April 3 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
In addition to joining us for Padrón’s visit and exhibition, please also take a look at
“De Película, Film posters from the Center for Cuban Studies”. Drawn from a treasure trove
at the archives of the Center for Cuban studies, this is a selection of arresting film posters reflecting
a keen instinct for conceptual clarity and a steady aim for visual impact. This small selection seeks to
reflect the remarkable love affair between Cubans and films, their own and foreign ones, as advertised by a distinguished
line up of Cuban artists.
Including work by Eduardo Muñoz Bachs, Antonio Fernández Reboiro and Rene Azcuy Cárdenas, Jorge Dimas González,
Ricardo Reymena and Julio Eloy Mesa Pérez, among others.
“De Película” will be on display at The Clemente’s L.E.S. ground floor gallery
from April 3 until April 30. Special thanks to Juan Tamargo and Bernardo Navarro Tomas, of the Center for Cuban Studies
staff. Curated by Miguel Trelles with Tara Ohanian.
