David K. Friedman
David Friedman’s paintings, drawings, sculpture and installations have been shown in galleries and alternative spaces in the United States and abroad, including P.S. 122, Dieu Donne, the Angel Orensanz Center, the DUMBO Arts Center. He has received numerous awards including bieng nominated for a Joan Mitchell Award.
Like Fontana, Friedman cuts into, torches, sands, collages and attacks the “body” of his chosen surface. He drips, stains, tattoos onto and into the cracks of the wood or fibers of the canvas with acrylic and pure pigments suspended by the aqueous media.
He draws with fire, by “painting” with a heat gun. Evocative of a beautiful wound, marks brand and embed the outer layers of the piece with constellations of black drill points and scars to direct to its singularity as an object and the artist’s hand.
