Born to diplomatic parents Flavia Souza travelled the world seeing exotic places that instilled in her a familiarity with the unusual. Originally from Brazil she eventually settled in the United States to attend Pratt Institute, SVA, New York University and San Francisco Art Institute. Despite her tertiary education, Flavia remained highly self-taught and inspired by inner rather than cultural influences. As with her upbringing and education she has remained an ‘outsider’ to the mainstream art scene exhibiting amply in a variety of under-the- radar spaces as well as established institutions including Film-Makers Coop NY; Pierogi 2000 Flat Files, The Storage Space, Bronx; Susquehanna Art Museum, PA; UNSTALLNING, Gothenburg, Sweden; Islip Museum, NY; Lilac Museum Steamship, Hudson River, NY.
