John Maria Gutierrez

Multidisciplinary artist who performs on screen and stage nationally and internationally. From Washington Heights, a hood of NYC, his/their works weave movement, music, singing in English and Spanish, and experimental theater to unwind a complex urban disparity brought on by social and systemic failings.

Multi-lingual, multi-racial, multi-complicado, jagged, blurry, and oftentimes violent, John's world is not straightforward or single-genre—and neither is his/their work. It reaches for healing and dialogue around personal and communal traumas experienced within a world actively facing, reflecting, and surviving global colonization and systemic oppressions. Art is John's tool to reflect lived experience, relate to others, activate change and combat ignorance/indifference. John invites those foreign to his/their experience a window into this perspective, and those familiar, a reminder or permission to feel “YOU ARE NOT ALONE.”
