La Ventana de los Chévere

  • Teatro LATEA, The Clemente Center 107 Suffolk Street New York, NY, 10002 United States (map)

La Ventana de los Chévere follows the Chévere family—Machucha, Maruchi, Felipe, and Felipito—through the years between 9/11 and the 2008 financial crisis. Playwright Iván Acosta witnessed, photographed, and filmed the attacks from his Hell's Kitchen apartment window, and that experience became the seed of this deeply personal story about loss, resilience, and love.

As the 25th anniversary of September 11th approaches, few commemorations focus on the Latino community that lived, worked, and grieved through that day—stories rarely given the platform they deserved, then or now. Acosta's play fills that gap, honoring the Latino experience of 9/11, including that of first responders who lived it firsthand.

Performed entirely in Spanish, the production weaves together collective trauma, military service in Iraq, family relationships, and the distinct way of life in New York's Hell's Kitchen at the time. It's designed to reach Spanish-speaking theatergoers so they can relive, reflect on, and learn about Hispanic/Latino family dynamics during one of the most defining periods in recent American history.
