The People’s bus / el bus del pueblo

The People’s Bus is a mobile unit designed to engage residents in a direct, artistic, and sensory celebration of democracy designed by LES resident Yazmany Arboleda. It is a retired City bus formerly used to transport detainees on Rikers Island, which has been transformed, with input from New Yorkers, into a community center on wheels to engage people in NYC’s civic life through beauty and joy. The People’s Bus will be stationed as a destination point in our outdoor venue and will empower artists to collaborate through civic art projects and workshops to Lower Manhattan publics, and other boroughs when it travels. Programming will happen with the support of the NYC's Civic Engagement Commission.
